37. The Redeeming Christ

It took 9 years to construct the statue, which stands at 124.7 feet tall.
The monument of the Redeeming Christ, which is now an internationally known symbol of the city, was conceived by Brazilian engineer Heitor da Silva Costa and executed by French artist Paul Landowski (with the help of the Romanian sculptor Gheorghe Leonida for the head). Its construction began in 1926 and was completed in 1931.
